Folk Rock

One of the first bands to record under this genre, which was coined during the mid sixties, was The Byrds with their rock arrangements of Bob Dylans music, specifically their debut album. In fact Dylan liked it so much he recorded a few albums during this period which are defined as folk rock. These are Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), and Blonde on Blonde (1966).

Britain closely followed, bands like Pentangle and Fairport Convention leading the way. Strangely, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds reckons that The Beatles were responsible for the first established folk rock tracks, citing " She Loves You " from 1963. source Wikipedia.

Having lived through the sixties and watched the emergence of folk rock, mainly through people like Bert Jansch, who formed Pentangle, and Donovan, I believe that Britain was way behind the talent of bands and musicians from the States. This fact can be seen from my choice of music from this genre. One of the problems that folk music in Britain during the late fifties and early sixties had to struggle with was the emergence of skiffle groups which set back folk by about five years. The States had the great singer songwriters producing tremendous protest songs, essentially about Vietnam.
